THE LAW OF THE MIDDLE AGES

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

Throughout the Middle Ages, it was believed that keeping the people scared of the punishments was the only way to keep control and order. For this reason, all crimes, from stealing to murder, all had extremely harsh punishments.

Although there were gaols, they were usually only used to hold a prisoner until the trials rather as a means of punishment. g

Fines, shaming, mutilation and death were the most common forms of punishment and torture. There were no police forces in the Middle Ages so all law enforcements were in the hands of the public.
