THE LIFESTYLE OF A LORD

FOOD AND DINING

Most people of the Middle Ages ate bread. People mostly preferred white bread made from wheat flour. However, only the Lords and wealthy were able to afford the wheat needed to make these bread, so these types of bread were mainly eaten by the wealthy.

Animals such as deer, boar, hares and rabbits lived in the woodland and were often hunted by the Lord. These animals were the property of the Lord and other villagers and peasants were not allowed to hunt them. If a peasant got caught hunting the animals, he would be faced with the punishment of getting his hands cut off.

The main drink of the Middle Ages was ale. It was extremely difficult to brew ale and the process usually took a very long time. Most of the peasents were not allowed to sell their beer without the permission of the Lord.

HOUSING

The homes of the Lords were much more elaborate and decorated than the peasants' typical home. A Lord's home would've had paved floors, sometimes decorated with tiles. Tapestries were often hung around the walls, providing not only decoration to the house, but also an extra layer of warmth.

Fenestral windows, with lattice frames that were covered in a fabric that had been soaked in resin and tallow, allowed the light to pass through but at the same time, keeping out the wind and drafts. Only the wealthy were able to afford glass window panes. Besides them, only the church and royal residences had glass windows.
